On this day-long bus trip, we will visit several less-well-known mound sites in southeast Ohio as we work our way to the astounding stone quarries at Flint Ridge State Memorial. Approximately 10,000 prehistoric mounds are estimated to have originally existed within the area of Ohio, and we will visit some interesting survivors, including: remnants of a major Adena Culture ceremonial center near Athens, Ohio; a uniquely shaped mound “off the beaten path” near Tarlton; and one of two animal effigy mounds in Ohio, believed by some to pair with the Serpent Mound. We will also have an extended visit at the Flint Ridge State Memorial where we will enjoy a guided tour of the museum and participate in Native American activities. There will also be time to walk among the ancient flint quarry pits, which were the source for highly prized stone that was used across eastern North America. A lecture will also be given at The Castle prior to the trip to provide context for what we will be seeing.

Site visits will include some moderate and inclined walking on prepared paths of up to a half mile round trip.

Included in the ticket price will be a catered lunch. Participants will be able to choose from several lunch options including vegetarian, and other dietary restrictions will be accommodated if possible.
