Third Thursdays with The Castle: “Josephine Phillips (1896-1975) Memories of a Remarkable Lady” By Ray Swick

Thursday, October 17, 2024 7pm – 8pm

Recollections of my most important history mentor and a friend who helped shape the course of my life and career in the most salient way. Josephine Phillips, of Massachusetts birth, became an important cultural force in, and beyond, Marietta as an important history scholar. Her extensive primary research became the basis of four books and numerous articles all set in her favorite period of history, the frontier Ohio Valley. Through the friendships that she forged in her Marietta years (1933-1975), she influenced the careers and lives of many people. An adjunct to her own profession as an historian was her passionate love of books. (They filled every room of her Fifth Street house, except for the kitchen and bath). This led her to become a successful businesswoman, owning and operating her own bookstore. Josephine Phillips was a remarkable, charming, most wonderful woman in multi-faceted ways–whose indelible smile was impossible to forget.
