Night at the Museum 2023

Saturday, Nov. 18 6:30 – 8pm

Immerse the family in local history! This is your chance to interact with a new cast of famous and lesser known historical figures with local connections. You’ll have the opportunity to hear a variety of historical accounts and ask questions. Walk away with new perspectives, ideas for further study, and a deeper understanding of the people and events that influence our present. Register today before tickets sell out!

This year’s exciting cast of historical figures includes:

Hannah Nye – The wife of the late Edward Nye, owner of the house at 418 Fourth Street, or also know today as “The Castle.” Following Edward’s death, Hannah continued living in the home with her daughter and her young family. Hear about Hannah and Edward’s life together, her transition through the various phases of mourning, and her life in The Castle with her daughter, son-in-law, and young granddaughters. (Portrayed by Rebecca Phillips)

Helen Josephy – From her upbringing in Marietta’s small Jewish community, Helen became an acclaimed travel and fashion writer. She received her start in reporting working for her local newspaper The Marietta Times before moving on to prolific publications such as Paris Vogue and authoring her own books. Meet Helen to learn about her world travels and her career later in life. (Portrayed by Julie Casto)

William Mills – William is best known for the countless contributions he and his wife Betsey made to the Marietta community. Hear more about William and Betsey’s role in advancing social and charitable causes throughout their lives by enjoying a conversation with Mr. Mills. (Portrayed by Steve Casto)

David Putnam – David Putnam is best known as an active businessman on Marietta’s west side and a fervent abolitionist. His prolific role in the Underground Railroad won him acclaim, but also dangerous enemies. Learn more about Mr. Putnam and hear a few harrowing stories of his time in Marietta. (Portrayed by Scott Britton)

Edward Schramm – It is getting a little late in the season to visit Schramm Brothers, but the shop remains well stocked with a vast range of goods ranging from poultry to fresh fruit and vegetables to your billboard signage needs. However, the two brothers are best known for their skills as florists. Meet Edward, the younger of the brothers, as he explains their business venture and the unique job of being a florist at the turn-of- the-century. (Portrayed by Kyle Yoho)

Willia Cotton – Willia Cotton is a woman who racked up a number of firsts in our local history. She was one of the first female graduates of Marietta College, authored one of the first recorded booklets on the history of Mound Cemetery, and was one of the first librarians at the “new” Carnegie library in Marietta – todays’ Marietta branch of the Washington County Public Library. She was an avid researcher, writer, and historian who advocated for historic preservation and played a role in establishing Campus Martius Museum. Learn more about Willia’s interesting career! Tours begin every 15 minutes and last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Limit of 10 per group.
