Enjoy learning about the ever evolving local agricultural practices, with a focus on orchards. We’ll talk about agrarian practices and use of native flora by Native Americans, the introduction and cultivation of fruit trees during early pioneer settlement, and changes brought on by industrialization. Dan and Katie Burch of Hidden Hills Orchard will discuss what it’s like to own an orchard today, and describe their experimentation with historical fruit varieties. Included in this evening of historical discussion will be a three course menu highlighting the agricultural history of Washington County.

We look forward to sharing with you the historical references on the menu. One is the use of corn. While corn was a staple for sustenance, it has “grown” to become a thriving cash crop across much of the Midwest. The introduction of a wide variety of apples cultivated for cider, as well as eating and baking, has an intriguing history, especially in Appalachia. While in many minds the peach is iconic of the South, our own unique peach has a fascinating history.
