This year’s Caravan theme is the Arts & Crafts Movement, which broadly influenced both artistic and industrial design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We will be visiting two modern-day workshops operating in the Arts & Crafts tradition that will illustrate copper work, book-making, and other craft media; and the Chillicothe home of Dard Hunter, probably Ohio’s premier Arts & Crafts practitioner in the early 20th century. A preparatory lecture will be given by Castle archaeologist Wes Clarke, who will also lead the trip. An early morning snack, and lunch at the Earthworks Café in Newark, are included.
(Fall view of Dard Hunter’s “Mountain House”)
Agenda:
Morning: Learn about Arts & Crafts copper smithing with nationally recognized craftsman John Mook in Caldwell. Our visit will include light refreshments, a workshop demonstration, production examples, and items for sale.
Lunch: We will travel to the Earthworks Café, a relatively new but well-reviewed eatery in a repurposed industrial space near the prehistoric mounds of Newark. You will have a choice among three sandwiches, including vegetarian, with chips on the side. Water will be provided, or you can purchase your drink preference and/or dessert.
Afternoon: After lunch we will head to Chillicothe to experience the on-going legacy of premier Ohio craftsman Dard Hunter. Our visit will include a tour of Mountain House, the Hunters’ Gothic Revival home and gardens, which includes Arts & Crafts exhibits, and a trip to the nearby Dard Hunter Studio and sales room, where Dard Hunter III continues to make paper and woodcrafts in the Arts & Crafts tradition. The studio is located in an historic 1830s canal-era building.
This trip will not require much walking or stairs, and rest stops are scheduled as we travel in our comfortable, air-conditioned tour bus. Please join us as we experience these unusual destinations!
