Hear new stories about the nation’s struggle for Independence at our annual Patriots Tour at Mound Cemetery. A few topics we’ll discuss this year include: Commodore Abraham Whipple’s perilous, critical voyage that carried urgent dispatches from the Continental Congress to Ben Franklin and John Adams in France; the amazing service of the “Fighting Quaker” Colonel Christopher Greene and General James Varnum who commanded the trailblazing First Rhode Island Regiment which included White, Black, and Native American soldiers serving side-by-side; Rufus and Israel Putnam’s 1773 expedition to “West Florida” to pay American colonists for their service during the French & Indian War.

Mound Cemetery

Fifth and Scammel Streets
Marietta, OH 45750

Mound Cemetery was established in 1801 by Marietta city founders in order to preserve the Great Mound (also known as Conus), a prehistoric Adena burial mound. The cemetery has more American Revolutionary War officers buried in it than any other cemetery in the country. Rufus Putnam and Benjamin Tupper, who founded the Ohio Company of Associates are buried in Mound Cemetery.
