The list of accomplishments of Mid-Ohio Valley (MOV) residents and their impact on our city, state, and country is truly impressive. This tour will recount the lives and accomplishments of just a few of our town’s most talented leaders, including: Revolutionary War General and Continental Congress member James Mitchell Varnum whose groundbreaking efforts at Valley Forge resulted in the enlistment and integration of African-American and Native-American soldiers into his First Rhode Island regiment; Anchorage owner Douglass Putnam whose business interests involved real estate, railroads, banks, and more, in addition to his strong support of Marietta College and other institutions in the area; Choctaw missionary Catherine (Fay) Ewing who took in poor children and founded the first Children’s Home in Ohio that became a model throughout the entire country, as well as establishing the Woman’s Home in Marietta; Broughton Foods Company President & Marietta Community Foundation founder Carl Broughton whose philanthropy touched many lives in the community; Prominent Oil Producer and banker John Dinsmoor who had significant oil and gas interests in 5 states; and the Murray family who founded a 3-generation manufacturing business called The Airolite Company.
