Contained within this cemetery is the history of the western edges of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the formation of West Virginia during the Civil War, and modern day. The notable people and events of this historic cemetery span it all. Join us to hear about some of Williamstown’s most prominent citizens, including: the Williams family, namesakes and founders of the town; the Bukey family, an early family whose grandchildren played a very prominent role in the Civil War; Sobieski Morgan, an Ohio riverboat captain in the early 20th century; Frank Fenton, one of the founders of the local glass company; Donaldson Medcalf, a WWII bomber pilot and survivor of a Japanese POW camp; and the China-born Sheng family, a world-renowned artist and her civil engineer husband who were apprentices of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
