Rebecca will share information about the history of “cottage gardens,” their representation in art and literature, how to plant your own, and their environmental benefits.

About the Speaker: Rebecca Phillips

Rebecca Phillips is retired from the West Virginia University at Parkersburg English department, where one of her research interests was 19th-century women’s nature writing. A lover of antique roses who once grew multiple varieties, she has since abandoned any high-maintenance plants in favor of those that would have thrived in Victorian cottage gardens. Today, Rebecca is an enthusiastic habitat gardener and serves on the coordinating committees of the Historic Harmar Bridge Company Butterfly Garden and the Fort Street Pollinator Habitat. Some day she hopes to see poet Celia Thaxter’s restored Victorian garden on Appledore Island.
