Sports and athletic endeavors have been an integral part of American society for generations. Explore this large cemetery by car and learn about the wide variety of athletes buried here. Among the tales you’ll hear: two Marietta College football pioneers who played for Olympic legend Jim Thorpe in the NFL, a pro baseball player who cut short his career to serve his country on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, an iconic crew coach that made Marietta College a perennial contender at Dad Vail, a member of one of Marietta College’s first woman’s basketball teams in 1919, and an international circus acrobat from Austria. Note: because of the spread-out grave locations in this large cemetery, we will drive to various parts of the cemetery and will gather near the resting sites of these individuals.
Our tour guide will use an enhanced speaker system to ensure adequate audio levels and social distancing.
