“Over Here” Living History Day & 1917 Tours

Take a step back in time to Marietta in the pivotal year 1917. America has just joined The Great War and the local community is abuzz as individuals come to grips with what war might mean for themselves and their friends, family, businesses, and social groups… as well as their country. A question in everyone’s mind is what role, if any, they might play in the coming days. At The Castle we’ll explore this timeframe through living history displays and demonstrations representing local individuals of Marietta’s Red Cross and local Ohio National Guard company. Additionally, immersive tours of The Castle will be given by costumed interpreters representing members of the Davis family. (Tours are by reservation only.)


Outdoor Living History Displays – Free
Free admission to the grounds to see the outdoor living history displays located in The Castle’s courtyard. Living history interpreters will be portraying the local Ohio National Guard company that operated out of Marietta’s downtown armory. Additionally represented will be ladies associated with the Women’s Relief Corps connected to the local Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post. These outdoor displays will have items for the public to see and interact with in addition providing them with the opportunity to learn more about our local WWI history.

Donations are encouraged.

This immersive tour of The Castle will be led by living history interpreters taking on the roles of the Davis family and will be focused around the events happing locally, nationally, and internationally in the early days of America’s involvement in WWI. We’ll be transporting guests to April 20th, 1917 when renowned singer Margaret Wilson, daughter of President Woodrow Wilson, visited Marietta to give a concert in aid of the American Red Cross. Visitors will see the family busily preparing for the evening’s events and learn about the roles these people will play in the months to come.

(Please note: As specialized tours these will be different from regular house tours.)

Tours will be given on the hour between 1pm – 4pm and last approximately 45mins and must be booked in advance. Limited spaces available.
