Learn about the local sailors, riverboat pilots, and U.S. Navy veterans that have risked their lives on the world’s oceans and inland waterways to increase commerce and serve their country. Among this tour’s stories are: the legendary Commodore whose actions in 1772 against the British helped bring on the American Revolution, the sinking of the local steamboat Mechanic on its way to Marietta that required the rescue of its famous passenger – General Marquis de Lafayette, the seriously injured pilot of the steamboat Harry Dean who heroically steered the crippled boat to shore saving all of the passengers and crew, the casualties of the terrible explosion of the Buckeye Belle in Beverly, a beloved family doctor who commanded the USS LCI 670 that landed troops at Leyte and Okinawa during World War II, and one of the last witnesses of an atomic bomb test in the Pacific that spawned the name of a swimwear craze.
Our tour guide will use an enhanced speaker system to ensure adequate audio levels and social distancing.
