Cemetery Tours: Anti-Slavery and Freedom in Harmar

Saturday, May 21, 2022 – 10am

From the earliest founding of Marietta’s oldest district, Harmar was involved in the anti-slavery movement and was a home and refuge for multiracial families. Join us to hear the stories of: the Underground Railroad leader whose local court case had national implications, a founding family’s legacy that inspired radical abolitionist John Brown to take up his cause, the four free-born Muncey brothers who served as bodyguards to Union generals during their Civil War service, a highly respected man who escaped slavery and bravely served with his liberators of the famous Iron Brigade, and more.

Our tour guide will use an enhanced speaker system to ensure adequate audio levels and social distancing.

Tour begins at Harmar Cemetery,129 Wood St, Marietta
