This presentation will focus on the 1841 custody and alimony trials of Henry and Sarah Dawes of the prominent Dawes and Cutler families, as well as the aftermath of the trials. Discussed will be the societal context of the time as well as the laws that shaped their outcomes. The Dawes’ cases will be compared to similar cases in Ohio at the time. To give better meaning to the cases, divorce statistics for Ohio in the first half of the nineteenth century will be utilized.
