William Parker Cutler, born on July 12, 1812, was an outspoken abolitionist from Marietta, Ohio. Son of Ephraim and grandson of Manasseh Cutler, William was another influential figure in the notable Cutler family. His leadership in the anti-slavery movement at both the local and national level had a major impact during the nineteenth century. An Ohio State Speaker of the House and later elected as a U.S. Representative, Cutler’s time in Congress was very much active, but short-lived. Cutler’s campaign for congressional reelection was defeated in the 1862 election by his Monroe County adversary. Despite the support that Cutler had mustered throughout southeastern Ohio, the main barrier between Cutler and his aspirations of serving another term was his anti-slavery advocacy.
