Third Thursday Talk: “Marietta’s Forgotten Pioneers” By Scott Britton

Thursday, April 21st, 2022 7pm – 8pm

Reservations Required

While the exploits of Rufus Putnam and Dr. Samuel Hildreth are now widely-known because of David McCullough’s book The Pioneers, the stories of Marietta’s earliest multiracial pioneers have been largely forgotten. This Third Thursday Talk will discuss the lives of four groundbreaking African-Americans who settled in Marietta before 1815 and had a profound impact, not only on the town, but throughout Ohio and beyond. You’ll learn the widely varied tales of the multiracial man born in Harmar before the 48 pioneers arrived who became an Underground Railroad leader and first president of the American Sons of Protection in Dayton. Hear details about the young man who helped protect the early settlers during the Indian War, legally voted in Marietta, and successfully sued in its courts, all before Ohio’s statehood. Listen to the exploits of the Revolutionary War combat veteran who received bounty land and a pension in Marietta. And finally, discover the stories of the first ever Methodist missionary in America whose unfortunate and difficult circumstances in Marietta became the foundation for his religious work.

Reservations Required. Space is Limited.
