Third Thursday Talk: “On Military Leave with Flora Mason: A Marietta Musician’s WWI Experience” By Claire Crane

Thursday, October 21st 2021 – 7pm to 8pm (EST)

During the First World War, a conflict infamous for its inhumanity, over 3,000 American women travelled overseas with service organizations like the YMCA to serve soldiers hot chocolate, lead singalongs, give sightseeing tours, and dance the night away. In this presentation, Claire Crane will explore the significance of American women creating a home away from home “over there” by examining the experiences of Flora Mason, Marietta’s own “Y” woman, and the soldiers she may have served in 1918-1919 France.

About the speaker: Claire Crane began studying First World War welfare work in 2014, when she was earning her BA in English and history at Marian University. Since 2019, Claire has educated audiences of all ages about “Y” work as a living historian, basing her first-person interpretation on journals and letters written by men and women who volunteered with the “Y” during the First World War. As a Castle volunteer, Claire portrayed Flora Mason for the 2019 Night at the Museum, and she looks forward to sharing more details about Flora’s story.
