Pop-Up Tours: The Yanks Are Coming: Stories of World War I

Veterans Day – Thursday, November 11th, 2021 1:30pm & 3:00pm

Join us in the “Arlington Section” of Oak Grove Cemetery to learn the fascinating stories of Marietta’s Doughboys, including: a Native-American NFL player and coach turned insurance agent, a local barber who witnessed horrific racism and violence in a southern training camp while serving his country, an award-winning Marietta newspaper columnist and his “Uncle Twitch,” a family grocer who was wounded on Flanders Field, and an officer in the “Buffalo Soldiers” Division whose enduring legacy continues in Marietta to this day. Join us as we remember and honor those soldiers who started this revered national holiday.

  • Masks are not required, but the CDC still recommends their use for those who are not fully vaccinated.
  • At least six-foot social distancing between unfamiliar persons or groups is also suggested.
  • Our tour guide will use an enhanced speaker system to ensure adequate audio levels and social distancing.

The first burial in Oak Grove Cemetery was made in 1864, three years after the city of Marietta purchased the 33 acres of land from Judge Arius Nye. It is still in use today.
