Salon Concert Series
In the year 2007, The Castle's Salon Concert Series will have 9 concerts. Each concert will feature a discussion of a Victorian composer, beautiful music by the Trillium Piano Trio, and luscious Victorian desserts & Tea.
The Spring Concert Series begins April 27 with "Nordic Notes."
The countries of the northern fringe of Europe possess a rich folk heritage, a general enthusiasm for nationalism and a love of nature. Used to balance their general isolation, great distance from the cultural centers of Europe and a relatively undeveloped art music culture, these countries were home to many strikingly individual and imaginative composers throughout the romantic era.
We relish the opportunity to mine this rich vein and share infrequently performed works by Grieg, Gade, Bull, and others.
May 18, the theme will be "Song and Dance."
At once the simplest and most elementary examples of musical expression, songs and dances can achieve one of the highest goals of art; the expression of human emotion. From the stirring settings of romantic poetry by Schubert and Schumann to the exhilaration of motion propelled by the mazurka of Chopin and the furiant of Dvorak, seemingly light entertainments carry the profundity of passion and the wonder of motion.
June 22, the theme is "Joseph Haydn and Prince Esterhazy: The Artist and the Aristocrat."
The patronage system, which repelled an independence-loving Beethoven and failed to support the adventurous Mozart, provided a match for life for Joseph Haydn. It is unusual to have an association between an employer and a creative artist last as long and produce such a tumult of variety and excellence.
In his nearly 30 years of hot-house cultivation as Kapellmeister of the Court of the Esterhazy family, Haydn created works in every genre of music, treasured as models for generations.
