Historic Escapades

Five exciting days of hands-on historic experiences at The Castle during the last full week of June. Each day is filled from 9:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon with music, art, crafts, historic characters, museum trips, and other fun-filled sessions. More information...

Tours

The Castle was built c. 1855 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours concentrate on the Victorian era in Marietta. Tours are grade-level modified. Cost is $2.50/ person. Allow one hour.

Victorian Games

After touring The Castle, scouts can participate in games like croquet, graces, jacks, marbles, and hoop rolling on the lawn or, if inclement, parlor games in the Carriage House.

Cross Stitch

Each scout learns to cross stitch a simple design and take home her creation. Cost is $2.00/person. Allow one hour.

Victorian Fans

Learn about the language of fans, view the Castle's period fan collection, and create and decorate a fan to take home. Cost is $3.50/ person. Allow one hour.

Architectural Walking Tour

Before a Castle tour, scouts may be taken on a guided tour highlighting the various architectural styles of the buildings (homes, businesses, churches) within a two block area surrounding The Castle. Cost is free. The tour lasts about one hour.

Leather Working

In this activity the troop can learn the basics of leather stamping. Using professional leather working tools, your group can make rounders, key fobs, bookmarks, or awards fobs to take home. The cost per person is $3.00. Allow one hour.

Tea and Tour

The Castle also provides the opportunity for scouts to personally experience a Victorian tea. Scouts can enjoy finger sandwiches, assorted period desserts, tea, and lemonade, all while practicing proper tea etiquette. After tea the scouts can take a treasure-bag tour of The Castle and play Victorian games on the lawn. Brownie badge "Listening to the Past." Cost $8.50 per person. Allow two and one half hours.

Scarecrows

During the months of October and November, scouts can visit The Castle to rake leaves and make scarecrows. Cider and Doughnuts are served. Please bring rakes, clothing for scarecrows, and pillow cases for heads. Scarecrows can be left for the season, taken home or to a nursing home, or a contest can be held for awards. Cost is free.

Kite Making Workshop

The program allows scouts to learn the history of kites and their use during the Victorian era both as scientific tools and a popular form of amusement. Each youth will make their own sled kite. Cost is $2.50/person. Allow one hour.

Kaleidoscopes for Kids

Scouts will have the opportunity to explore how this Victorian pastime is created as they decorate and assemble their own kaleidoscope. Cost is $3.50/person. Allow one hour.

Quilting Design

While participating in this activity, students will create a design and make a "quilt square" out of wooden pieces. While here at The Castle, scouts will also get an opportunity to see quilts from the 1800's. The cost is $2.00/person. Allow one hour.

Covered Wagon Program

This program utilizes role playing and decision making skills. A costumed volunteer presents a program discussing travel from the East to the Ohio Country in the early 1800's. A miniature covered wagon is used to show the items a family would have taken with them on their journey. The program is approximately 45 minutes long and includes a small covered wagon kit for each youth. Cost is $4.50/person. Allow one hour.
