Day at The Castle

Experience life as a Victorian child. Learn first-hand about the food they ate, the games they played, and the music they listened to. Lunch and a treasure-bag tour are included. Cost is $5.50/person each. Limited dates. Day at The Castle lasts four hours.

Tours

The Castle was built c. 1855 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours concentrate on the Victorian era in Marietta. Tours are grade-level modified. Cost is $2.50/person for students, teachers and accompanying adults. Allow one hour.

Victorian Games

After touring The Castle, scouts can participate in games like croquet, graces, jacks, marbles, and hoop rolling on the lawn or, if inclement, parlor games in the Carriage House.

Victorian Fans

Learn about the language of fans, view the Castle's period fan collection, and create and decorate a fan to take home. Cost is $3.50/person on site or $4.50/person at school location. Allow one hour.

Architectural Walking Tour

Before a Castle tour, students may be taken on a guided tour highlighting the various architectural styles of the buildings (homes, businesses, churches) within a two block area surrounding The Castle. Cost is free. The tour lasts about one hour.

Covered Wagon Program

This program utilizes role playing and decision making skills. A costumed volunteer presents a program discussing travel from the East to the Ohio Country in the early 1800s. A miniature covered wagon is used to show the items a family would have taken with them on their journey. The program is approximately 45 minutes long and includes a small covered wagon kit for each student. Cost is $4.50/person on site or $5.00/person at school location. Allow one hour.

Kaleidoscopes For Kids

Students will have the opportunity to explore how this Victorian pastime is created as they decorate and assemble their own kaleidoscope. Cost is $3.50/person on site or $4.00/person at school location. Allow one hour.

Kite Making Workshop

This program allows students to learn the history of kites and their use during the Victorian era both as scientific tools and a popular form of amusement. Each student will make their own sled kite. Cost is $2.50/person on site or $3.00/person at school location. Allow one hour.

Quilting Design

While participating in this activity, students will create a design and make a "quilt square" out of wooden pieces. The cost per student is $2.00/person. Allow one hour.

Leather Working

In this activity, students can learn the basics of leather stamping. Using professional leather working tools, your group can make rounders, key fobs, bookmarks, or award fobs to take home. Cost is $3.00/person (on site only).

Educational Time Travel Trunks

As a supplementary educational resource for the classroom, The Castle has educational time travel trunks available. Each trunk contains background resources, suggested lesson plans, and hands-on activities. They can be kept up to three weeks. Below is the list of trunks...

  • Archaeology - Contains four archaeological excavation kits, pre-historic and historic artifacts, and instructions for the simulation of a dig.
  • Architecture - Contains a slide presentation on architecture in Marietta, books, puzzles, and information on historic preservation.
  • Bone to Stone - Contains identification keys, small fossils, books, and materials for creating "fossils" using the casting method.
  • Victorian Pastimes - Contains a slide presentation on Victorian lifestyles, games, a stereoscope, and other items related to Victorian America.
