This gazebo, which was originally the cover for the well, stood in the south yard of The Castle. When builder of The Castle, Melvin Clarke, left to serve in the Civil War, the gazebo was sold and moved across the street.
The Otto family bought the house and when they decided to move to Devola, took the gazebo with them. Later, they moved it again to Fifth Street when they moved back to town. When the Otto's moved the next time, the gazebo was left behind and the new owners did not want it. The Gazebo was then sold to Madeline Wagner. It took several men to carry it down the alley to rest in her back yard.
In 2004, Madeline Wagner donated the gazebo to The Castle. Since then, it has been a community project. Greenleaf Landscape created a new hexagonal brick base for it in the center of the heritage cutting garden. Dan Harrison and Associates moved the gazebo to their shop where it was restored through the winter. In July, the gazebo was strong enough to be moved to its site in the garden. Now it is completed with the installation of the copper roof.
We would like to thank The Edward Parrish Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century who have generously contributed to the restoration and Dan Harrison for his contribution of labor and materials.
